Social and environmental issues, affecting the USA and the world around us, which also impacts us, are our concerns. In 2011 we prevented a 'Waste Processing Facility/Incinerator' from being built upwind and 700 yards or less from Ainakea (Hawaii) homes in favor of the residents involved. ReplyDeleteThis project needs a health impact assessment before deciding on where to place it:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces/hia.htm
Quoted from the CDC website:
Health impact assessment (HIA) is commonly defined as “a combination of procedures, methods, and tools by which a policy, program, or project may be judged as to its potential effects on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population”
HIA is used to evaluate objectively the potential health effects of a project or policy before it is built or implemented. HIA can provide recommendations to increase positive health outcomes and minimize adverse health outcomes. The HIA framework is used to bring potential public health impacts and considerations to the decision-making process for plans, projects, and policies that fall outside of traditional public health arenas, such as transportation and land use.
Does Hawaii mandate this or similar? And if so, where does it say that?
ReplyDeleteGet this,I spoke today to a county employee (supervisor type) who is of the opinion that Bennett is donating the land for the waste station near Ainakea. Somebody is very good at planting this notion into the heads of locals.
ReplyDeleteWe need to get our hands on some documents, debugging this myth, and post them on our web-site.
Peter, any ideas?
