PLANT-BASED COATING FOR AVOCADOS HIDES WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE WHEN YOU HALVE THEM

"Thanks to a food technology startup called Apeel Sciences, eating fresh avocados will soon be a lot easier. The Bill Gates–backed company has developed a coating designed to keep avocados fresh for up to twice as long as traditional fruit, Bloomberg reports, and these long-lasting avocados will soon be available at 100 grocery stores across the Midwestern U.S. Thirty or so of the grocery stores involved in the limited rollout of the Apeel avocado will be Costcos, so feel free to buy in bulk."

It all sounds very good but real-life experience tells another story.  Newly purchased Avocados looked real good in the store, just begging to find a new home, and they did, my home.  I was eagerly awaiting the time when the skin gave slightly way to a gentle push with the finger.  Well, the time was today, and I imagined the flavor of them, while I was cutting one in halves to serve as part of my lunch.  I let the pictures, shown below, describe my experience.

Notice, the outside rim is still looking nice and green!

Not giving up so easily, I cut another one, and here is what I found.

Notice, the outside rim is still looking nice and green!

After a little digging it fully revealed itself for what it was.

Notice, the outside rim is still looking nice and green!

Bill Gates' sponsored company provided a means for grocery stores to trick consumers into buying Avocados that look and feel great on the outside but not so when one wants to eat them.  We have yet another way to cheat the consumer; instead of the grocery store trashing these gone-off Avocados, the let the end-user discard them, at their expense.

Who knows what this coating is made of?  What new health problems will it plant in our bodies?  The fact that the outside rims still look good, tells me that the coating is penetrating the Avocado to a certain level.

The moral of this story is, trust nothing and no-one, especially those businesses, who willingly sell food items that should be in their trash, and not in the trash of the consumer.

  1. I'm growing my own, but the February deep freeze killed all of my Mexican avocado trees, or at least down to ground level. A few finally sprouted from the rootstocks, which are not the same unless it was from an intentional seed, which 3 were.
It won't be this year, and I just got one last year, because they were just a year old, but maybe next year.
The whole orchard is replanted 16 trees.

    1. I am so sorry for your loss. I love Avocados, and they fit well into a KETO diet. With this new gimmick, in the market place, I don't know where to get unadulterated Fruits, at the present time.
